Introducing Katie McCullough, the new SLIS Program Administrator

Please give a warm SLIS welcome to our new Program Administrator, Katie McCullough!

Could you tell us a bit about yourself?

I am originally from Denver, Colorado. I come from a big family- I am the fourth youngest of five sisters in my family, and I we are very close. I have my BA in Art History, my BFA in ceramics, from University of Colorado, Boulder, and my Masters in Public Health from University of Iowa. I am a mom to 2 wonderful boys, William and Henri.

What led you to taking this position at SLIS?

When I started out in higher education over 10 years ago, I did a job very similar to this in a different department. I love supporting students and faculty and helping make people’s experience here at the University of Iowa a positive one.

What is your favorite genre of books?

I am a HUGE non-fiction reader. Especially when it involves art history and the intersection of feminism and art. I love reading about new topics and am always open to cool book suggestions- send them my way!

Who is your favorite author?

Milan Kundera who wrote “The Unbearable Lightness of Being” among others. I adore him. The way he can weave himself as the author into the narrative is hauntingly beautiful.

What is your favorite thing to do in Iowa City?

I love getting coffee and meeting interesting people- Cortado is my favorite coffee shop and I am looking forward to when we can all be on campus safely and I can once again sit there on the patio!

What do you do in your spare time?

I don’t have a lot of spare time, but I volunteer with local non-profits and make a ton of art when I can!

What are you most excited for in your new position?

Working with such a wonderful and interesting group of people!
