SLIS Professor Working to Bridge the Knowledge Gap

Professor Jennifer Burek Pierce has been featured in the American Libraries online publication in recognition of her work supporting early childhood literacy. This past fall Dr. Burek Pierce’s community engagement class worked with the Sioux City Public Library to locate organizations with an interest in children’s literacy. Her work included gathering resources that can help children get a jump start on literacy and language skills. Experts encourage parents to begin talking with and reading to their children at birth. Early literacy skills can help avoid the "knowledge gap", a term used to describe "learning disparities seen in children of different socioeconomic status." Children's librarians can help bridge the knowledge gap with story time and other early literacy programming. They can also communicate the importance of early literacy and how to develop those skills with caregivers.
