First LISSO Meeting of Fall 2012

First LISSO Meeting of Fall 2012

The first LISSO meeting of the semester was packed full of information! The website photo contest was announced (details to follow soon on the website), and word was put out for anyone who would like to volunteer to be the un-official SLIS photographer. For more details on that please email Cassandra Elton (email available in the UIowa directory).

Karen Fischer, the SLIS librarian, presented on her role is as the SLIS librarian, talked about libguides, and offered her services as a resource for professional advice on CVs, cover letters, and research paper help.

BSides editors Jen Eilers and Sarah Alexander talked about the importance of free access to information and the student journal BSides. They emphasized that you can submit anything to the journal to be published: "It does not just have to be words on a page," emphasized Alexander. Previous publications include websites, videos, slideshows, and personal narratives, all in addition to a more traditional research paper. "Submit your work" was the mantra of the presentation, both editors emphasizing the importance and value of adding your voice to the free-access journal. For more information on BSides, friend them on Facebook, follow them on twitter, and check out their website at

Treasurer Audrey Altman announced plans for LISSO to purchase a button maker to help spread the word about SLIS and censorship and all things libraries. There is still room in the budget, so if you have more ideas for fun things you'd like to do this semester, like bring in a speaker to present at a meeting, or host a conference about a specific topic, let Audrey know! Her email address can be found in the UIowa directory.

Social Chair Bennett Magnino announced the next LISSO social, to be held this Friday at Andrea and Micah's house. The theme is cake and cupcake decorating; sounds like it will be delicious. Details can be found in your email.
