First Ever SLIS Photo Contest

First Ever SLIS Photo Contest

SLIS is pleased to announce its first ever website photo contest!

In an effort to help update our website and get current students involved, SLIS is hosting a semester-long photo contest, beginning September 15, 2012 and ending November 30, 2012 at midnight.

Contest is open only to individuals who are currently enrolled as graduate students at the University of Iowa in the School of Library and Information Science at the time of entry. You may submit multiple photos, but no more than three (3) images for contest consideration per entrant will be considered. Any additional images over the maximum allowed may be submitted for website use, though they will not qualify for the judged contest.

Each entry consists of an image taken or created by the entrant, submitted via email to cassandra (dash) elton (at) uiowa (dot) edu. Email must include "Photo Contest Submission" in the subject line and the name of the photographer/creator in the body of the email. The image must be in a .jpg or .png compatible format. Please send the full-sized images, but keep in mind that they will be trimmed to banner dimensions (about 960 pixels by 200 pixels). (see TIPS at the end for more information)

This is a photo contest, but you may also submit images of your own creation that you feel are representative of SLIS. The same rules apply for images as for photographs in terms of size, usage, releases, etc.

If the photograph or image contains any material or elements that are not owned by the entrant and/or which are subject to the rights of third parties, and/or if any persons appear in the photograph, the entrant is responsible for obtaining, prior to submission of the photograph, any and all releases and consents necessary to permit the exhibition and use of the image. If any person appearing in any photograph is under the age of majority, the consent of a parent or legal guardian is required.

In other words, by submitting an image you are saying that (1) you are the photographer/creator (2) any subjects in your image know that you are submitting this image in the SLIS Photo Contest and (3) have given you verbal or written permission to use their likeness and for it to be published on the internet.

The First Place winner will receive a $25 gift card from Prairie Lights and their image will become the new banner photo on the homepage of the SLIS website. Up to six (6) Runners Up will also be named, with their images appearing as banners on subsequent pages on the website (About SLIS, Prospective Students, Current Students, Faculty & Staff, Current Projects, and Alumni).

SLIS reserves the right to use any and all submitted images on the SLIS website and Facebook pages without compensation or notification. Please make sure you have the consent of your subjects before submitting any images to the contest.

Official judging will take place at a special meeting at the end of November with Haowei Hshieh, Jennifer Burek Pierce, Kit Austin and Vicki MacLeod as judges. Images will be presented without names attached as to avoid bias on basis of submission. The winner and runners up will be announced at the final LISSO meeting of the semester and will also be notified via email.

Banner images are proportioned differently than other images in that they are long and skinny. This means that the subjects of your image need to be focused across the center of the space. An image that might have pleasing proportions in a 4x6 photograph will most likely not crop well into a 960 pixel width banner image. Keep this in mind as you work on your submissions, and feel free to examine the banner images currently on the SLIS website and other websites for an idea of what makes a successful banner and what does not.
