BSides Poster Workshop

BSides Poster Workshop

On Friday, March 23rd, students, faculty and local library and education professionals gathered at the Iowa City Public Library for a practice research poster presentation sponsored by the student e-journal BSides.  The poster session provided an opportunity for students who will be presenting research posters for exit final examination this semester to exhibit their posters and receive feedback on them.

The event also featured talks by recent alumni.  The event began with a presentation by SLIS alumnus Ian Mason, who shared his experiences as technology consultant at Cornell College.

Alumnae Julia Skinner and Katie DeVries Hassman joined the conversation via Google+ video chat in the latter half of the event to discuss their experience in LIS doctoral programs.  They responded to questions posed by current BSides co-editor Melody Dworak about their time in the MA program at SLIS and how they felt it prepared them for graduate life and research.

Perhaps the greatest benefit of the venue was the prospective it provided for students midway in the program by allowing them to preview the final poster presentation process and to gain a glimpse of life after SLIS, both in the professional and the academic realm.
