Jen Teitle Talks About Funding

On October 2, 2012, Jen Teitle, UIowa Sponsored Research Coordinator, visited LISSO to talk about how to get funded as a graduate student.

She offered a variety of online resources and databases for students to search, such as Sponsored Programs Information Network (SPIN), CDC Student Fellowships, and Division of Sponsored Programs. (Some of these resource require you to log in with your HawkID and password.)

Teitle also encouraged students to look locally. "Talk to the people that you know, look at the awards people you know have received, work to make connections in the field," she explained.

Teitle encouraged student to schedule blocks of time, at least 30 to 40 minutes, for grant searching, and to give yourself a month or so to draft your grant.

The most important advice Teitle shared was "Don't force it! There are lots of opportunities out there. Second or third submissions are often very successful."

Teitle is happy to help any students who are looking for research and project funding. Her office is located in 403 Gilmore Hall. The blog, managed by Teitle, is also a great resource.
