Burek Pierce

SLIS is proud to announce that Associate Professor Jennifer Burek Pierce has been awarded a University of Iowa Arts and Humanities Initiative Grant award.  The Humanities project grants, which are awarded by Vice President for Research’s Office, are intended to provide support for faculty who are “preparing a publication or other scholarly work likely to make a significant impact on scholarship in the proposed field.”

The title of Professor Burek Pierce’s funded project is “Rest and a Change of Scene:  American Women on Illness and Recovery in the Long 19th Century.”  Her research will focus on the role of literacy in the restorative travel prescribed for women as a cure for a variety of illnesses, including heart conditions, mental health problems, insomnia, exhaustion and strain.  The Arts and Humanities Initiative grant will support travel to archives containing diaries, letters, and other writings of American women who managed to write, as well as read, during their illnesses.
