BSides Announces New Associate Editors

The peer-reviewed, open access journal BSides, organized and run by University of Iowa SLIS students, has appointed two new associate editors: Sam Bouwers and Melody Dworak. Bouwers and Dworak will be joining current editors Katie DeVries Hassman and Julia Skinner.

BSides was started in Spring 2010 as a way for SLIS students and alumni to share their research, get feedback and participate in the publishing process. Named for the experimental “b sides” of vinyl records, BSides accepts works in progress and works in many formats, including PowerPoint presentations and websites.

“In my opinion, it's important for SLIS to support this journal because this is the future of publishing,” said Bouwers, who got her B.A. from the University of Iowa in Journalism and Mass Communication. “Users today do not want to pay for information…BSides recognizes this and that's why all our material is completely open access.”

She said BSides also creates connections between alumni working “on the ground” and SLIS students studying at Iowa.

Dworak, who graduated from the University of Iowa with a B.A. in Journalism and International Studies, said she is hoping to continue the editing experience that she gained in previous jobs.

“I like working with people to get their work out there, to help them keep their own list of credentials current, and to show the excellent academic pursuits and intellectual curiosity happening here at SLIS,” she said.

She said having a journal like BSides, whose staff is active in LIS conversations, will help make SLIS a destination for future leaders.

The editorial staff of BSides is working on educational outreach and networking opportunities for the SLIS community in the coming months. Look for more information to come on the SLIS website and in the Fall Alumni Newsletter.
