Professor to Present at Midwest Academy of Management in October

Prof. Katopol will present her paper, “Closer than they appear: Administrative support staff as information sources for managerial decision-making in city government” at the annual meeting of the Midwest Academy of Management in Chicago.

Building on her examination of the information behavior of municipal administrative workers and the managers they support, the paper is meant to encourage managers to consider their information sources for decision-making and the problems associated with obtaining information from persons without domain expertise or skills in searching and evaluating information. The study also suggests that knowledge management systems be designed, not for the end user of the information, but for the persons doing the actual search and retrieval, in this case, administrative staff.
