Room at the Table: Creating Affirming and Safe Spaces for LGBTQ Patrons

October 15, 2019 - 1:30 pm to 3:00 pm

Room 2032
100 Main Library
125 West Washington St.
Iowa City, IA 52242

One of the challenges of working in libraries can be making room at our tables for LGBTQ+ patrons. This session aims to help libraries take steps to make their spaces and collections more welcoming to LGBTQ+ patrons. This session will be interactive and will include discussion and future planning. We'll talk about collection development, outreach, creating a culture of welcome, intersectionality, and compassion. We'll also talk about specific resources, displays, and ideas that have worked for other libraries. There will be time to ask questions, dig deeper, and expand your vocabulary of welcome. This session is appropriate for any librarians, paraprofessionals, staff, or students who are responsible for planning and programming or for anyone who interacts with patrons. Rebecca Yowler, Assistant Librarian for Research and Instruction at Knox College Library, will be the speaker for the program session.
