There and Back Again: A Conservator's Tale

November 10, 2016 - 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm

Main Library Room 2032

University of Iowa Libraries presents the 3rd Annual William Anthony Conservation Lecture featuring conservator and book binder Barbara Korbel.

Barbara Korbel is retired from a 34-year career as a book conservator at the Newberry Library and previously, the Art Institute of Chicago. She received her BA from Dominican University and MA from Northern Illinois University. She has taught classes and workshops at a variety of venues including Columbia College Book & Paper, Paper & Book Intensive, Penland School of Craft, and Haystack School of Craft. She continues to teach at the Newberry Library, drawing inspiration for classes from their special collections.

Throughout her career, Korbel maintained a studio practice that is now the focus of her day. Her time is divided between an exploration of the history of bookbinding-making historical models to help others understand what she's learned - and weaving, which is her contribution to a recently established collaborative business venture.
