Punk Zines, Libraries, and Book Culture

April 13, 2017 - 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm

1505 Seamans Center

What might punk zines' political and activist intervention into library and book culture tell us about the pre-history of social media and its consequences for the present political moment?

Janice Radway will be the guest speaker for the School of Journalism & Mass Communication’s annual McGranahan Lecture. Janice holds an endowed chair at Northwestern and is the author of the legendary book Reading the Romance, which catalyzed “active audience” studies in communication and media disciplines. Her new project is about punk zines and library archiving of these once-radical, underground, and marginalized publications. She is asking questions about the memorialization, celebration, and preservation of such texts in libraries, and the implications of this kind of “book culture” in an era of digital media.
