How to Earn Your Book Scouts Merit Badge

January 17, 2019 (All day) to April 17, 2019 (All day)

Special Collections' Reading Room

How to Earn Your Book Scouts Merit Badge is a new exhibit coming to the Special Collections' Reading Room January 17th.

The exhibit is curated by three students, Damien Ihrig, Laura Michelson, and Zoë Webb, who are working on receiving their master's in Library and Information Science and also working toward a certificate in Book Studies offered by University of Iowa Center for the Book. This certificate, known as BLIS, trains students in the production and legacy of the book as a physical artifact.

Inspired by the Official Boy Scout Bookbinding Kit from the 1950s, this exhibit combines these three curators' interests in the various aspects of book arts and book history. It will include many of the raw materials used in the production of books, a selection of artists' books, historical examples and models of book types and structures, as well as a few of the students' own creations.

Damien, Laura, and Zoë would like to give a special thanks to Tim Barrett, Director of the Center for the Book, Giselle Simón, Conservation; Bill Voss, Conservation; and Matt Wortel, Department of Earth & Environmental Sciences for their incredibly generous advice and donation of materials for the exhibit.

The exhibit will open January 17th and be on view until late April.
